Maximum section efficiency is the peak of CL/CD, not maximum lift and not minimum drag. On a drag polar it is where a straight line through the origin touches the curve.

In a steady glide the airplane’s lift-to-drag ratio is its glide ratio. The airfoil’s lift-to-drag ratio is higher, because the section does not carry induced drag or the rest of the airframe.

One angle of attack produces three coefficients. Lift says whether the wing can carry the weight, drag says what it costs, and moment says whether the tail can hold the attitude.

Past an abrupt stall, the lift on the way down in angle is often not the lift on the way up. The loop is a history effect. A single sweep, or a steady solver marched in one direction, can draw only one branch.

A polar is a trade already drawn. The cruise point, the climb point and the stall are different places on the same curve, and a shape that helps one of them moves the others.

Section efficiency is CL/CD at a stated lift coefficient, Reynolds number, Mach number and surface condition. Across a flight it is a table of those values, not the peak of one polar.
